Pumpkins: Something Old, Something New with Stir-fried Pumpkin Flowers


Did you know that pumpkins have been around since 7000 BCE? Now *that* is Something old. Something new is planting out pumpkin seeds in EarthBoxes® on our front deck. Most years, the pumpkins start in the raised beds out back. Unfortunately, the nasty squash bugs from last season wintered over, so I needed a plan B. One of my readers suggested a decoy plant in the usual place, so I did just that. It’s growing so nicely, though, that I fear I’ll be just as heartbroken if the nasty bugs take hold.

We’ve been growing pumpkins for decades, mainly for carving and decorating. We’re all fans of Halloween around here, so nothing could be more satisfactory than a Jack o’lantern carved from a garden gourd.

But that is Something old before we knew about Pumpkins. Today we will learn Something new about Pumpkins, especially the Pumpkin Flowers, and how we use them in food.

We can use Pumpkin Flowers and pumpkin buds for cooking as food, did you know that?

Stir-fried Pumpkin Flowers How to


Step 1. A handful of fresh pumpkin flowers

Step 2. Please take off the flower core; otherwise, it won't be charming

Step 3. The pedicel tears off the skin; otherwise, it will be a bite when eating.

Step 4. Remove the green leaflets from the lace. After all the treatments are finished, rinse them with water and gently grab the pumpkin flowers because they are more absorbent, then put them in the basket to drain the water.

Step 5. Put oil in the pan and heat the pan with garlic slices, and turn on high heat

Step 6. Pour in the pumpkin flowers and stir fry evenly. Add an appropriate amount of salt.

Step 7. Stir-fry until the pumpkin blossoms are cooked and ready to cook

Step 8. This dish is prevalent and delicious, with a slightly sweet taste.

So Total time spent cooking the Pumpkin Flower or Pumpkin buds is just 10 minutes. It could serve two people. Too easy to do.
